Pet Peeve - Door to Door Utility Salesmen
I hate it when a utility salesman knocks on my door around dinner time to try and sell me a price protection plan for electricity or natural gas.
First of all, your interrupting me during my dinner time/relaxing time as if I actually want to be bothered. And secondly, you're trying to rip me off with that price protection plan. Also, who do they think they are by demanding that they see my gas bill. You could at least ask.
Utility Salesman: "We're offering a price protection plan on natural gas. Let me see your natural gas bill."
Me: "That's quite alright."
Utility Salesman: "But if you see here, gas prices have increased 136% since 2004 so we're offering protection from further increases."
Me: "Actually, the gas prices have dropped this past winter. In fact, I believe its set to stay around $8/GJ, so there's no real foreseeable increase. You see, I actually work in an Energy Management department, so I look at this stuff all the time."
Utility Salesman: "Oh. Well, thank you for your time sir. Have a good night."
I probably should've mentioned to him that the natural gas prices skyrocketed in 2006 due to hurricane Katrina, but that might've been overkill.
Seriously, I know they're just doing their job. It burns me that these companies go around and pick on people's fears and lack of knowledge. As if the utility company really has my best interests at heart.
